Restorative practices are considered to be the best way to manage and address behavioral and discipline-related issues. Through these practices, relationships can be restored and the harm that occurred can be meaningfully addressed. In order to bring restorative practices to schools, both awareness and compassion are needed on the part of students and the educators. This session provides strategies for developing mindful dialogue, interpersonal awareness, the recognition of common humanity, and cultivating compassion for others in order to better deal with behavioral and discipline-related issues.

In order to meet the needs of all students we need to approach learning in a way that braids academic instruction, positive behavioral supports, and social emotional learning. By integrating these three strategies teachers can take steps to create a compassionate classroom. This session provides participants with the knowledge they need to develop and implement the science of compassion at the level of a classroom or school.

The Science of Compassion outlines key strategies that can be applied to the field of education to promote teacher wellness. Through this presentation participants will be exposed to the research and scientific basis for compassion-based practices that promote resilience, awareness, self-compassion, and compassion for others. Through the development of these competencies participants will gain insight into the habits of mind that lead to wellbeing and personal flourishing. These strategies will be presented through applied practices that can be integrated into both the classroom and one's personal life.
